More Caching Stats
Well at least I know where I stand in the World Rankings. A new stats bar to add to my page as the Drunner stats dont seem to be updating much.

Maintanance Day
Finally got out to carry out some maintenance on my caches. Managed to visit the majority of them and form some sort of repair.
The repairs ranged from simple things like - Replace the Log Book to the drastic measure of replacing the whole cache.
Luckly I had thought forward about the types of maintenance I would need to carry out and had premade some more cache boxes. The drastic ones were due to water soaking everything or there was a hole in the box/mishapped because it had been stood on.
A good day followed by some finders saying that one of my series was a well maintened set of caches. That makes it worth it :)
I was quite impressed at the recent Mega Event in the UK as in the gift pack you recieved as well as getting the bits to make up a cache, you also recieved a cache repair kit which consisted of:
- Jay Cloth
- Spare Logs (Various from Micro to Large) approx 10ish
- Plastic Bags (That fitted each log) approx 10ish
I now carry this with me to assist out any Geocache with a quick wipe and log replacement if its very wet.

The Curse of the FTF
As of yet I have not been able to get a FTF (First to Find) on a cache.
Mainly due to three reasons:
1. People working closer to my home location where I get notifications.
2. Technology.
3. The same cachers always cleaning up on the FTF's and not giving anyone else a chance.
As technology has increased and given easy access to emails and Geocaching Applications it has now become even more of a race to complete a FTF.
A cache that I had published yesterday only took 22mins after being published for the FTF to go. That included the cacher parking up and then walking to the cache. According to the logs there were 2 people at the cache at the same time and they got a joint FTF.
It would therefore seem that the FTF's are only availble to an elite few who match the two reasons (and a few that match all three) and do not want to give anyone else a chance to get at least 1 FTF.

Mage at the Mega
Been a while since I have blogegd. Sorry about that.....
11/08/12 - UK Mega Event at Cartmel Race Course
What a great event. Great weather for the day which really helped.
Arrived as the caching event started which was opened by the Mega Event Organisers and Jeremy Irish (The man himself).
A great day will lots of fellow minded cachers. Met lots of people from many countries and collected and swapped Tracking Numbers. Ended up with some 140ish trackable numbers by the end of the day. Thats taken my TB count up.
A course of caches was layed out in the nearby woods and fields with the local Cartmel Community getting behind the spirit of the event and there were lots of great smilling faces from them.
Doing caches at a Mega Event is slightly wierd in that instead of being really steathy there was a queue to sign the log at each cache. Made for a much different caching day, but was great fun.
Found a Cuckoo Cache at the event GC4C35 of which there are not many about these days.
A good mystery cache GC3RGBW - Sub Limina, Even if you cant get out to do the cache, have a go at solving the puzzle.
If you havent been to a Mega Event before I would really recommend it.

Maintenance
A day of cache checking and some urgent maintenance needed on one of the caches. For some reason the cache box at GC2Y5ZE had been broken (probably stood on!). Carried out a full swap out as it was quicker as there were lots of people out walking today.
Hopefully will get out more this year and increase my cache count.

Do you Know the way to Lyme Park?
The sun was out so we went off for a walk today into Lyme Park from Nelsons Pit in Poynton to do some new caches that have appeared.
GC2ZD1M - Do you Know the way to Lyme Park? 1
Had the first DNF of the day on the first cache. We had a good look for this one on the way into Lyme park and on the way back but had no luck in finding it. We will have to do this cache again another day.
GC2ZD3B - Do you Know the way to Lyme Park? 2
Our first find of the day. We had our mind set on a particular type of cache for this one so we missed this one in the first few minutes of searching, but then opened our eyes to locate the cache. A great hiding place.
GC2ZD52 - Do you Know the way to Lyme Park? 3
Walking on we found this one fairly easily after waiting for a dog walker and cyclist to go by. Signed the log and replaced. This route gets very busy during the nice weather.
GC3098V - Do you Know the way to Lyme Park? 4
At first we got the wrong tree due to the GPS signal bouncing about a bit, but then one of the younger members of the group found the cache straight away. Signed the log and replaced. On the way up the hill we met Young Thropp and had a quick chat swapping our trackable numbers. Always nice to meet a fellow cacher out and about.
This is our first "GC3" cache.
GC309A2 - Do you Know the way to Lyme Park? 5
Last cache of the series, stopping to look at the views over the cheshire plains. I have done this walk a few times now and the view is always stunning, especially on a clear day. A clever cache hide.
GC242QG - Lyme Park No 38
I got to the GZ co-ordinates for the cache and located its hiding place which was nicely hidden. I had just retrieved the cache when the farmer had started driving his sheep up the road so it got a lot of muggles comming to stand near to the walls to watch. I had to wait a bit before replacing the cache into its hiding place.
GC2NP5W - Hase Bank Wood
A walk along a wooded path with lots of rhodi bushes. It was all the rage years ago to plant rhodi bushes, but they have become very purvasive over the years and taken over the wild forna. The park rangers and the NT (National Trust) are slowly reducing their numbers but its is a long process to allow the natural habitat to return.
We walked down the path until finding the spot. A nice easy find.

We solved this one after parking up, but decided to get the cache on the way back from our walk to Lyme Park as there were a lot of people about near to the cache site. Found the cache after doing the tying of the shoelace trick and retrieved. Signed the log and replaced.
Returned to the car and home. Another good caching session and walk.

25 Hides
I now have a total of 25 hides (plus 1 that needs to be done). A nice milestone to achieve.
Getting the hides is harder than finding caches with all the permissions and planning stages, but I think gives you a good feeling of satisfaction each time they are found and logged.
